To be blunt, the ability to evaluate expressions and formulas is not something that fits our concept of a data grid. This is something that a spreadsheet type of component would do. A grid does not have a formula expression input like Excel or a spreadsheet do, and its editors are bound to the type of field (e.g., a numeric field will produce a numeric textbox where you can't write text and expressions). A grid's primary goal is to show repeatable data coming from models.

If you want the grid to let the user perform calculations, you can use the cell template to provide the desired calculator and formula expression parsing, and then you can update the model instance that the current row is bound to after you have completed the desired calculation.

We have another open feature request regarding the Spreadsheet component. This component will expose features that are close to Excel and thus the behavior you are referencing would be handled there. 

That being said, I have added your vote for the Spreadsheet component and you can follow the public thread to receive email notifications on status updates. To keep the Feedback Portal tidy I am marking this as a duplicate to the Spreadsheet feature request.
