Improve horizontal spacing between OrgChart nodes

The horizontal space between all OrgChart nodes on the same level is one and the same and it is equal to the horizontal space needed to show the child nodes of the parent with most child nodes. It is represented by the red squares on the image below. This results in excessive empty horizontal space between nodes with no child nodes or no visible child nodes.

This may be observed on the following Dojo runner. Currently the OrgChart has empty space between the first level nodes, and also there is empty space after the last node:

Suggested behavior:
There is no empty horizontal space between nodes on the same level - highlighted in yellow on the image above. In the above scenario, there should be no empty space between the first level's second and third node and no space after the third node, which may be observed, when the first node has no expanded child node:

Is there a programmatic way to set individual spaces between nodes?

Hi Matthias,

Hiding parent elements that aren't currently needed can help reduce visual clutter and potentially improve usability when displaying a large number of nodes in the Kendo UI OrgChart. However, this approach does not directly resolve the core issue of excessive horizontal spacing between nodes. The OrgChart's layout logic ensures that all sibling nodes have equal width, and it reserves horizontal space for all children, even if some nodes are hidden with CSS. As a result, simply hiding the parent elements might be suitable in some scenarios, but it will not eliminate the empty space or scaling limitations you are experiencing.

Let me know in case you have any additional questions on the matter.

Could a solution to the problem be to hide parent elements that aren’t currently needed?

If there are too many nodes, the org chart isn't really usable.

Here is an example involving 1,000 people. Dojo example Large orgChart

    Hi Euan,

Thank you for your feedback. It is greatly appreciated, and I have forwarded it to our Product Management Team for further consideration.
I fully recognize the value of this feature. It is among the highly requested enhancements, and I expect it to appear on the Roadmap in the future. At this time, however, other higher‑priority initiatives have required our immediate attention.

At the moment, we are unable to provide a timeline for the implementation of this feature. If this functionality is critical for your application, I can connect you with our Professional Services team, who specialize in consulting and delivering custom feature implementations.

Please note that any CSS modifications are the responsibility of the developer. Such adjustments are not officially supported and may result in unexpected side effects.

    Hi Nikolay,

Thank you for getting back to me. It is disappointing that a commitment has not yet been made to address this issue, particularly as it appears to have been a known control deficiency for the past five years.

It would be helpful if you could provide a concrete example of the CSS adjustments referenced in your response, to better understand the proposed workaround.

Additionally, it would be useful to understand whether a timeline can be provided for targeting a fix in a future release. If this is not currently possible, customers would at least be able to make an informed decision about evaluating alternative component suppliers whose org chart controls do not exhibit this scaling limitation.

    Thanks,

    Euan

    Hello Euan,

This is a feature request rather than a bug. The improvement for horizontal spacing between OrgChart nodes is still under consideration, but it was not included in the most recent planning cycle. The feature remains on our radar for future releases, but there is no confirmed timeline for its implementation at this stage.

Regarding workarounds, currently, there is no official built-in option to adjust the horizontal spacing between OrgChart nodes. However, some users have managed to achieve limited adjustments by applying custom CSS to the OrgChart elements. For example, targeting the node containers and modifying their margin or padding properties can help create more space between nodes. The effectiveness of this approach depends on your specific OrgChart configuration and styling.

      Hello Mike,

      Your feedback is highly appreciated.

We are aware that this feature is very much needed in the OrgChart, and it will be added. Its implementation, however, appeared more complex than we wished. Nevertheless, we will do our best to include it in the RoadMap in the near future, otimistically for Q4 this year.

I've already commented on this before, but I agree with Paul that this component is essentially unusable. I've developed functionality that I hope to release one day (and business users keep asking me about it!) and this needs to be fixed.  I want to request that you make this a higher priority, please.

I am afraid this feature is still unplanned. I will forward it again to the Product Management team.

Any updates on this? The OrgChart is essentially unusable (even when zoomed out) in our case with complex organisation structures that can have many children in child nodes. See attached recording where the tree has been expanded down 7 levels. The rendered width is 840,000px, and nearly all of it is empty horizontal space.

I noticed the same behavior. If any particular node is expanded with more than 5 children nodes, all other un-expanded nodes are being spaced very far apart and entire chart requires long scrolling through lots of white space.

I think this needs to be fixed so that chart is more condensed regardless of expansion status.

      Hello,

I am also having this same issue, and would like to see a fix in the near future.  There is no way I can deploy what I have developed until this is issue is resolved.

      Hello Andrew,

      Thank you for the feedback.

I agree with you and forwarded this feature request to the Product management. Unfortunately, it didn't make it in the last planning as other items had higher priority. Nevertheless, the feature is quite valid and has many votes and will be considered.

Following up along with others here... This is a major problem with the Org Chart. It creates an extreme content-shift that  renders the Org Chart pretty much unusable. Our company has paid good money for this feature and we politely request that it be addressed?

      Hi Nikolay,

appreciate regular updates around this one.

Can we ask about the same from the most recent planning?

Similar to others this remains the key blocker for making the solution live.

Workarounds would also work here :)

      Thanks in advance

I guess you have other priorities but the decision disappointed us.  The current one is more like beta version. This problem essentially renders this feature useless. We hope to see this issue resolved as soon as possible with a renewed recognition of the need for it in the field.
