Guys, as Kieren proposed, is using plot bands (http://demos.telerik.com/kendo-ui/dataviz/bar-charts/plotbands.html) applicable visualization for your scenario?

Yes, add a Threshold as a property to a series. So if one series is area(volume) and the other is line(threshold). When the volume values go over the threshold the area above the line could be set to a different color. This would be VERY useful.
