I agree with you about the big difference when we compare the shared project with the MultiColumnComboBox component in the Angular suite. I shared the StackBlitz example as a possible solution in the current situation. 

Once we start working on the current Feature request, its status will be changed and you will be notified about it. At this time, we can't say an exact release date for the Native MultiColumnComboBox.

Thank you for your interest in the MultiColumnComboBox component. Currently, the component is not in our plans for the next release cycle. For sure, the component will be delivered in the future. Based on the community interest and the votes the current Feature request collects we may consider its earlier implementation. 

Meanwhile, I can suggest you check this StackBlitz example. It demonstrates how we can implement similar functionality to the MultiColumnComboBox, using the ComboBox component and a template for its popup. In addition to the linked example, you can check our Custom header and footer demo to define a custom header and footer in the ComboBox template.
