Let me elaborate a bit on how and why the pasting behavior currently is. One first needs to copy an item, so they select an item to copy it either using the well-known key shortcut or using the context menu. Then comes the paste operation.

If they perform paste without changing the selection, the designer will paste the item in the same container that is the parent of the currently selected item. It will get a bit displaced according to the source item so that the user easily distinguishes the new item from the original one.

If the user first selects a container, then the designer will make this container the parent of the new item and will put the newly created item in the middle of this container, because it cannot infer the desired location.

These are our considerations and these seem to work well for the majority of the users. That said I will decline this feature request, but please do describe eventual reasoning to change it and I will reopen the discussion.
