Ability to freeze table header in web-based report viewers
It would be good if the table headers can be frozen. This can be really useful in case of a big report which is displayed on a single page.

Okay, I have updated to 14.1.20.618.

Ran into a few bumps, but I sorted it out.

Hi Tony,

I see that you have active support, so this should not be a problem. I would recommend to download and install our latest version- 14.1.20.618. Please, navigate to your Telerik Account -> Downloads -> Progress® Telerik® Reporting -> Latest public version and download the MSI file.

Let me know if everything went well during the installation and project upgrade.

Regards,
Neli

Hello, I inherited a project that uses Telerik Report Designer 13.2.19.918, and I am trying to get the ability to freeze table headers in the web-based report viewers working.

As I understand it, I need to upgrade to R2 14.1.##.###, and I cant figure out how, my Progress Control Panel doesnt give me the option.

Will this require a new/different license to upgrade to?

Or is there something I am missing?

So has this finally been added a year and a half after saying it was in the next release? how do we use it?

Can you please elaborate if it will be included in the R2 release which is due? We also have a couple of clients that need / want these features....or has anyone found a replacement product that can do it?

Hi Niek,

You are right that we couldn't make the feature for the last release. The Blazor Viewer and the improvements in the Crystal Report Converted and in the Web Report Designer were prioritized.

When the status of the work item changes all the users that have voted for the feature will be automatically notified.

Am I missing something, or did this feature request did not make the release?

Milen, here are my thoughts about this feature.

  • The report-wide boolean properties to turn it on would be either "FreezeHeadings" or two separate properties, "FreezeColumnHeadings" and "FreezeRowHeadings".
  • It would only affect the on-screen interactive representations of the report; I don't think it would affect exported documents, especially PDF. I believe the web UI would be the main place this feature is needed.
  • For most reports, the headings would be the top one or two rows; when a user scrolls up and down, the header rows should not move; everything else should scroll.
  • If the report has frozen row headings, then as the user scrolls the report content left and right, the first column does not scroll.
  • With both column and row headings frozen, it should act like the attached Excel document, which has "Freeze Cell" turned on at cell B3. The following animated GIF shows this excel sheet being scrolled.Freeze Columns/Rows Sample Animation

Hi Chris and all,

We do understand that in some particular scenarios the requested functionality would boost the end-user experience significantly.

Without being final, our current planning for the R1 2020 release (expected in mid-January) includes it. That said, please anyone share exactly how would your end-users expect this to behave. That would help us shape the feature so that it suits your needs best.

Milen

@John - what product are you going to move to?  Other than SSRS, which is just insanely expensive, I've not been able to find anything comparable.  If I could, I'd be done with Telerik Reporting for sure.  So if you have an alternative to share, I would be most interested.  Thanks!

It's likely that this will cause us to move away from Telerik this year as this is the most requested feature by our user base.

Hi there,

So it's August 2019, could you confirm this feature is seeing any development?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Nicholas, John, Dan,

Thank you for sharing your input. I certainly understand the lack of development here can be disappointing and I’m sorry to hear you feel this way.

We are currently working on the planning for the next major release and we’ll hopefully have some exciting news to share soon. Other tasks in the backlog prevented us from prioritizing this so far, nevertheless your feedback is invaluable, and I assure you we will take it under account.

I’ll keep you posted about any updates.

Milen

Agree 100% with John and Nick.  As I told the sales person who was hassling me to re-up for multiple years, I will only do one year at a time because I'm so desperate to find a replacement.  The unwillingness to implement basic features like this is untenable in 2019.

I agree with John, we are looking into replacing Telerik due to small issues like this that dont meet our own client needs and we end up writing reports from scratch.

The fact that this feature is lacking is why we are actively looking for a replacement for Telerik.  We tried to hack our way around this in the HTML5 viewer, but the way it is implemented prevents even that approach.

Can we get it added in ASAP? It was requested 4 years ago and clients have to keep exporting into excel to do the freeze row headers which is fairly annoying on their part and leads to them wanting reports made in excel.

Hello Nicholas,

No, this feature is still not planned for implementation, so I cannot provide any specific information.

Is there any update on when this may be included?

Both interactive and print preview respect the "Print on every page" functionality of the group headers. Still, for a report with long pages in interactive view, it will be helpful to support frozen header sections and table headers. This, however, can be implemented only for web-based report viewers and we approve this idea only for them (title updated).

I am also very surprised that this feature is missing. Our client is insisting on frozen headers and this could certainly force us to use different reporting software.

I assumed this to be a given feature in any reporting engine since it makes reports much more user-friendly. Disappointed that Telerik does not have it.

Frozen headers is very important, the users asking about this interaction for usability.

My users are also asking about frozen headers on the HTML5 viewer, I consider this a Top priority requirement from user interaction usability experience.

This is a must have requirement for most business reporting features. Even SQL reports has this formatting option!

Add another +1 on this request. I can't fathom a modern report writer that does not support this. We are wrapping up a new application and to hit this, and other roadblocks, is more than frustrating. We will be looking to pull Telerik from the application and use Crystal Reports instead.

I'm adding a +1 in particular regard to the HTML5 viewer. The "ColumnHeadersPrintOnEveryPage" doesn't appear to affect the HTML5 viewer unless you use the "Toggle Print Preview" button. My customers mainly want to view reports through the default HTML5 viewer, and one of the first things they asked when I showed them their new reports is, "How do I freeze the headers?"

Unfortunately I'll have to tell them, "Telerik doesn't support that. The best you'll have is to 'Toggle Print Preview,' or print to PDF."

Bummer.
