The selection with Shift makes sense for item an a list, where selecting for example the first item and then the third on with Shift down, will select the second one also. But you need some order well defined in order to do that. We could potentially do that for items in a table or maybe select all items intersecting the rectangle covering the currently selected items + the mouse position on click.
