Data Matrix Barcode
Please add support for Data Matrix barcodes. As of Q3 2014 this is the only format we will still need to rely on another library to create an image that is placed in a picture box. We would much rather be able to use the Barcode control for all our barcode requirements.

Hello all,

Just wanted to let you know that in R2 2020 we have included the DataMatrix barcode as planned. It supports square and rectangular layout, different text encodings and encodation modes. You can check it along with more new features in our What's New page. As always, we would love it if you give it a try and share your thoughts with us.

All best,

Reporting Team

Hello and thank you Eric and Andrew for sharing your opinions on the DataMatrix implementation.

We also find that the DataMosaic mode would be more practical for smartphones and other camera devices rather than regular barcode readers. At this point we'll focus implementing the DataMatrix barcode considering the ISO/IEC specification. I can assure you that we'll retain the current functionality of the Barcode report item like setting the background and foreground colors, stretch to accommodate the available space, left/right/center alignment, rotation and so on.

Thanks again for your input - it's been always valuable to hear what exactly are our users' needs. All best and stay tuned for R2 2020!

There needs to be enough contrast between the barcode pattern color (usually black) and the background (white) in order for it to be reliably read by a scanner.

Data Mosaic creates multi-colored barcodes and some of the segments are yellow and cyan, which I suspect would be hard to read by a scanner (i.e. not enough contrast).

I've never seen these multi-colored barcodes used anywhere. Not to say they don't have their purpose in life, I've just never seen them and my first guess would be that they would be difficult to scan.

One thing that might be more useful is the ability to change the overall color of the barcode. Leave it a solid color, just allow us to specify a color other than black. (for example, to match the color scheme of a printed piece perhaps I'd want my barcode to be dark blue instead of black). It would be up to us (the developer/end user) to ensure we specified a color that gave enough contrast so as to not cause reliability issues.

Or for now, just make them all black. At least we'll finally have Data Matrix and I think that's really what everyone is looking for.

Hi Ivan

Glad to hear you are now implementing the DataMatrix Symbology.

I work for a barcoding solutions company here in the UK (www.kelgray.co.uk), and am the head of software development.

None of our customers within retail or production arenas use the "Data Mosaic" feature, just the Standard.

We use devices from Honeywell and Zebra, I have a Honeywell CT40 in front of me and that does not have the capability to scan the Data Mosaic feature.

So, from my perspective, the Data Mosaic feature, at the moment would not be useful. Saying that, who knows...tomorrow we may have a customer requiring it :-)

Just by adding the Standard Data Matrix symbology into your package will be of huge benefit for companies, so I am just happy with that.

Keep up the good work!!

Many Thanks

Andy

Hello all,

We're currently working on the Data Matrix barcode and will do our best to include it in the incoming R2 2020 release.
Our implementation is based on libdmtx library which includes a feature called "Data Mosaic". Basically it is a color-coded matrix representation, which produces barcode images with smaller size and you can see it in action here.
Based on our research, this mode is not supported by conventional barcode readers and is not included in the official specification ISO/IEC 16022:2006. However, we would like to hear it from you if such feature is valuable for your business scenarios and if you would expect it to be included in our DataMatrix implementation. Your vote will help to adjust our development plans and determine on which features we should focus for the incoming release.

Thank you in advance for your input!

Hello,
I note that this functionality is unplanned.
We were waiting for R1 or R2 2020.
Should we give up and switch to another technology?

In the health sector it is mandatory in many places including patient care. We generate patient care wristbands and GS1 and including the required information on small area requires the data matrix format

Hello Huy,

We are considering this feature request with high priority. Our plan is to implement DataMatrix barcodes for R1 or R2 2020 depending on how smoothly the development process goes.

Hi, considering this is an industry standard you really have no excuse for not including in your reporting software.

Yes, we work in automotive parts industry where it is a standard.

Hi, here in Brazil we really need it too.

This symbology really needs to be in Telerik now. We write industrial software in the UK and all companies are moving to DataMatrix on their labels and reports.
