Not seeing any records on Mac

I fire up Fiddler Everywhere on my Mac. Generally, it appears to do nothing.

In further detail, "Stream" and "Decode" can be toggled, but otherwise do nothing. The connections icon has a hover-over describing my host and states I have a network connection. The help icon goes to the very limited documentation via browser. The settings icon pops open the settings dialog, which does appear to save changes, but not impact the "nothing" being done by the application. The capture button and inspectors button appear to do nothing. The main viewing area states "No records available." The area to the right of the main area states "Please, select a single Web Session to inspect." And that is it.

Either I'm doing (or not doing) something dumb, or it just isn't working for me. Any help would be appreciated :)

Mac specs: High Sierra 10.13.6, 2.6GHz i7, 16 GB memory

After further improvements and enhancments, Fiddler Everywhere now supports low-level network capturing on macOS. More about the new network capturing mode can be found in the following documentation section:

Hello everyone,

Update: The latest versions of Fiddler Everywhere can now be used seamlessly with macOS and CiscoVPN as described in this KB article: https://docs.telerik.com/fiddler-everywhere/knowledge-base/configure-vpn-with-fiddler

Hello Ferdinand,

You should not experience the issue when using an ethernet connection without any additional proxy being set. Please do let us know if that is the case or if you are still experiencing the issue.

However, the issue is still there when using VPN so the issue is still to be resolved.

I see the same behaviour. I use Ethernet connection without any proxy.

Fiddler fails enabling the system proxy. It starts no proxy server either. No errors in electon.log. Errors about getting the proxy connection in netcore.log. If you really tried to access a connection "OSX Default", there was no such connection on my machine. Checked by `networksetup -listallnetworkservices`.

I initially posted it to the forum: https://www.telerik.com/forums/not-capturing/page/2#_-49EqDBnE6A0DRrnFhPIQ.

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for sharing. Regarding the change, we are both thinking in the same direction. Persisting the system proxy settings is a must in order to recover them when something goes wrong.

Hey Simeon,

I use Fiddler Everywhere on my Mac a lot. I've noticed something similar. If I'm on Ethernet and I click Capture in the bottom, it doesn't enable the proxy settings.

If monitoring the logs, you see this message in Console.app at the same time:

error 11:15:02.424185 -0700 Fiddler.WebUi nw_path_close_fd Failed to close guarded necp fd 400 [9: Bad file descriptor]

Debug logging doesn't give much extra...

But I do see this message, which I think is more related to the fact that my network uses Auto Proxy Discovery/PAC file.

error 11:16:54.274484 -0700 Progress Telerik Fiddler Received XPC error Connection interrupted for message type 3 kCFNetworkAgentXPCMessageTypePACQuery

The change here that I think is important is:

  1. When enabling "Capture"
    1. Any existing system proxy settings should be saved to a file.
    2. The existing system proxy settings should then be cleared.
    3. The system proxy settings should be configured to send data to Fiddler.
  2. When disabling, the opposite should happen:
    1. The system proxy settings should be cleared.
    2. The previous settings should be put back in.

Hello Graham,

Thanks for the reply! Are you able to access the Internet without the proxy in your office or there is a firewall? If your proxy settigns are set to Auto Proxy Discovery or Automatic Proxy Configuration these are still not supported by Fiddler on Mac and Linux. We are using the WinHTTP native API on Windows for these and we are researching for alternatives on Mac and Linux.

Hello Simeon,

I noticed this today.

When I am on the WiFi everything works correctly(fiddler ask to modify proxy settings and traffic is captured)

When I am connect with my Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter, it does not do the above. Normally I am not on WiFi since our office does not have WiFi, but since I am working from home today I have noticed this.

Do you still want the proxy settings?

Hello Graham and Ryan,

Thank you for your feedback! It really helps us a lot to build Fiddler Everywhere.

Could you please, let me know if you have any proxy settings set on your Mac and if yes, which protocols are set.

Please, note that Fiddler Everywhere is still in a preview phase and the best is yet to come. Here you could find our roadmap.

Simeon
