Allow the Chocolatey Fiddler package
When Telerik first acquired Fiddler, the community was afraid that Fiddler would become a paying tool. Telerik made an important statement: "Further, we have learned from the mistakes of others who have acquired free tools only to turn the tables on the developer community and monetize them at a later date." (source: https://www.telerik.com/about/press-releases/2012/09/10/telerik-announces-the-acquisition-of-fiddler).

Recently, Telerik asked Chocolatey, a widely used Windows package management platform (https://chocolatey.org/) to remove Fiddler from the packages list.

Whatever the reasons are, as a Chocolatey and Fiddler user, I am disappointed by that move. I am managing multiple machines, and Chocolatey helps me synchronize and accelerate new setups. Telerik just asked me to force manual installation of Fiddler, as well as manual upgrade (no, I don't want/need as many auto-update software as I have installed software). I see no value in doing so, except maybe forcing user registration (which is monetizing and breaks their promise) or for some legal reason.

I would kindly ask Telerik to take a stance on what was communicated to the community, and allow Chocolatey to provide an easier way to get your tools installed on more machines.

I'm filing this as a bug, since it was working, and it now is broken for me.

I am very happy to say that there is now an officially supported Fiddler package back on Chocolatey.org:

You can find an official blog post on the topic here:

Charles Proxy is an awesome alternative - v3 is still free, but v4 is paid

@Tsviatko any news? Are there any business or technical hurdles to go through, still?

Can't wait when it will be back!

Thanks Gary. The chances are we will follow the same base pattern as you, i.e. we will not host a copy of Fiddler with Chocolatey. We will just have a dedicated installer downloaded from a URL on our side. Hopefully this will be pretty straightforward to do.

Yip, there should be no issues with going down that route.

Tsviatko that is indeed great news, and will help tremendously. I appreciate the attention you gave to this issue, I'm looking forward to its resolution!

Tsviatko this is great news! I work for Chocolatey, and was previously the maintainer of the Fiddler package. Please let me know if there is anything that you need to help with getting this re-instated at chocolatey.org.

YEAH!!! It's coming back πŸ˜ƒ

Good choice Telerik and thanks whomever who helped bring this into the light internally and fought for it!

Yes, at this point of time the chances are we are going to bring Fiddler back to Chocolatey. It will be officially maintained by Progress this time so always latest and greatest. Please, stay tuned while we sort this out.

I'm super excited over the fact that this ticket just changed into 'Researching'!
Hoping that Telerik will listen to the community and see the value in allowing us to easily install Fiddler on any machine. This decision have ment that Fiddler is no longer a part of my regular toolbox, maybe it'll come back.

This is a poor showing from Telerik. I jsut tried to install Fiddler from Chocolatey and was unable.
Please reverse this decision.

I wonder if Eric Lawrence would have sold Fiddler to Telerik if he knew it would come to this. Pretty shameful move, Telerik. Looking forward to someone creating an open-source competitor now that'll eat your lunch.

Really disappointing move from Telerik and goes against the spirit of the statement they made when they acquired Fiddler. Making it available in package only serves to increase exposure of the company.

I'm confused by this move. This makes it more difficult to use Fiddler. Why was this done? This is disappointing.

You're bad and you should feel bad.

Making Fiddler available in more channels such as choco will only help get the Tellerik brand out there MORE, and the e-mails you are going to obtain will just wind up being blocked/unsubscribed later.

Listen to the community of users and provide choco support.

Bad move guys. I'll just use another proxy that wants to have its product used by developers.

I have to agree with the above posts. If there is a legitimate reason to hide this package, it would be helpful for Telerik to explain why.

this sucks indeed!

Pretty horrible, I've been a long time Telerik user (and paid subscriber to the dev ultimate packages).... leaves a nasty taste in my mouth when a company does this.

Agree, terrible decision. Will use other tools that are on Choco...

very disappointing move from Telerik, a company apparently for developers, not providing a reasonable workaround for one of the best devops-friendly windows packagers out there. Shameful, where I can, I will be taking my business elsewhere, and encouraging others to do the same.

I agree with everything above. If the only reason you are against this is because you want to be able to get users emails then put in a 'first run' popup in the application referenced by chocolatey to request an email. That way you allow people use a package manager like chocolatey as well.

BUT if you do that make it an optional email address that you can cancel and still use the application otherwise as Christian above says you have broken your promise as to not monetizing the product.

You might think a cancellable popup would mean a drop in user signup, but atm people can bypass you by just sharing the file they download from you anyway, so even the current 'signup wall' isnt perfect anyway. But at least this way it will get more email addresses and you dont get bad PR for the company.

This sucks. Protectionism from a dev company never ends well for them. Bad move.

I just noticed this today. It's very disappointing indeed! :-(
