This seems to be hitting users of Win 8, Win 8.1, Server 2012 and Server 2012 R2. If the account type is not set to Administrator (see attached screen shot) then Test Studio will not successfully connect the recorder. You click Record, then select IE. The browser will launch and you see "Connecting to browser" but when finished the IE window is blank and recording is non-functional. NOTE: You can record if you manually open IE then use the "Attach to IE" feature. Also playback works just fine. It's only a problem when you click Record then select IE.
